by Fat(not found) · Endgame Defense Layers
Core Idea: Stack multiple overlapping defensive layers so each hit is reduced, divided, absorbed, or avoided before touching your life pool.
A Zash hit that one-shots unprepared players (3,000 damage) can be reduced to just ~200 damage with resistances + mana barrier + instant flasks + curses.
Priority order: Resistances (75%) → Utility Belt → Mana Barrier → Phys→Ele → Minions → Slows → Stun Threshold
Most ranger builds recommend evasion armor. In campaign: ignore that advice.
| Stat | Campaign Reality |
|---|---|
| Evasion ~30% | ~7/10 hits will land |
| Your life pool | Very low → those 7 hits kill you |
| Armor (even low) | ~80% reduction vs small campaign hits |
| Energy shield | Hard to scale early |
Recommendation: Use armor-based body pieces, or hybrid armor/evasion or armor/energy shield. Even on a ranger or mage, armor dramatically out-performs evasion in campaign.
You can beat the campaign with negative resistances, but it hurts:
Endgame Layer Priority: HIGH
| Resistance | Damage Taken | Survivability |
|---|---|---|
| 0% | 3,000 dmg | ❌ Only ~2% of players survive this |
| 45% | 1,650 dmg | ✅ Manageable — ~85 total gear res needed |
| 75% (cap) | 750 dmg | ✅ Any character survives |
Endgame Layer Priority: HIGH — easiest power spike
The utility belt has a hidden implicit: flask recovery applied instantly. Combine it with a flask that also has "recovery applied instantly", and every flask tap becomes an instant heal.
Also works for mana flasks — crucial for mana-stacker builds with Damage from Mana Before Life.
Endgame Layer Priority: HIGH
Mana is effectively a second health bar. With Damage Taken from Mana Before Life, a portion of every hit is diverted to mana instead of life.
| Source | Amount |
|---|---|
| Passive tree (top cluster) | 16% |
| Passive tree (second cluster) | 16% |
| Total from tree | 32% |
| Tattoos (e.g. Martial Artist) | 15% |
| Dream Fragments (unique ring) | 50% |
Endgame Layer Priority: MEDIUM — build-specific
Physical damage is the most dangerous because armor is weakest against big hits. Convert phys to elemental → apply capped resistances + armor-to-ele mods.
| Unique | Conversion | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| Cloak of Flame | 50% phys → fire | Mages, ES builds |
| Lightning Coil | Phys → lightning | Str/Dex characters |
With armor applied to elemental damage on boots, gloves, and passive tree: survive 10k+ physical damage.
Endgame Layer Priority: MEDIUM — great for evasion builds
Evasion uses entropy — more enemies = faster guaranteed hits. Minions split aggro, halving the attacks directed at you.
| Method | Source |
|---|---|
| Rattling Scepter + skeletons | Weapon swap |
| Talisman (offhand) | Wolves on kill |
| Wolf pack skills | Temporary wolves |
Endgame Layer Priority: MEDIUM — high uptime = excellent value
Fewer monster attacks = less damage taken. Slowing enemies reduces their attack opportunities by ~30%.
| Source | Effect |
|---|---|
| Chill (any cold dmg) | 20% slower (add 5% cold extra on tree/weapon) |
| Temporal Chains (curse) | ~30% slower — Blasphemy aura, high int |
| Whispers of Doom + 2 curses | Temporal Chains + Enfeeble (30% less dmg) |
Endgame Layer Priority: MEDIUM-HIGH — mandatory for CI & channeling
Stun isn't just the 2-second knockdown. Micro-stuns interrupt your actions constantly. Skills with long wind-up (Plasma Blast, Snipe) are unreliable without stun threshold.
CI builds have 1 life — stun threshold is based on life. Without investment: perma-stunned.
Find it on: Passive tree nodes, gear suffixes.
Based on your energy shield. Low life + low ES → you'll be shocked without noticing. Shock = 20% more damage taken, breaking all your defenses.
Armor is weakest against big hits — critical hits are the biggest. Look for:
| # | Layer | Impact | Priority |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Resistances (75% cap) | 4x survivability vs ele | #1 — do this first |
| 2 | Utility Belt + Flask | ~2x effective life pool | #2 — cheapest power |
| 3 | Mana Barrier | 2–3x EHP | #3 — huge for casters |
| 4 | Phys→Ele Conversion | 2x phys EHP | Build-dependent |
| 5 | Minions | Variable | Great for evasion chars |
| 6 | Slows / Temporal Chains | ~1.5x EHP | High uptime = great value |
| 7 | Stun Threshold | Enables skills | Mandatory for CI/channeling |
| B | Ailment Threshold | Prevents shock death | Essential if low ES |
| B | Crit Defense | Prevents one-shots | Important for armor stackers |
